Systems theory, software systems that support facebook/twitter?

Hey, I am meant to write an essay where I am to use systems theory to "analyse the software systems that support facebook or twitter", but I am not quite sure what is meant by that. If it means the underlying technology that drive these services, would that be like PHP and MySql? How would you go about analysing these systems? I find the whole thing quite confusing, don't know where to even begin. Anyone familiar with Systems Theory able to give me some pointers?
