Yes. You can unsubscribe your friends posts without making him unfriends.
Go to your fb profile.
click the box include your friend. ( click on friend)
there will be all of your friends.
just take the mouse point on friend tab, in front of the friend who you want to make unfollow.(Don't click on it. just take the mouse point)
Then go to settings.
Unclick all if you don't want any updates from him anymore.
