The book I was reading yesterday (Content Rules) indicated the email list is not always the right answer. If you have more content to give away, give it away without requiring joining the email list to get it. Unless you have a well defined plan of what you want to do with the list and some good reason, you are better off not having it.

Having people put in their email will reduce the number of people by some factor. maybe 50%. If you have no good reasons for the mailing list, you should just let all of the people have the free content and then push them towards something you want.

On the other hand, popular ways for building lists are many, but I would recommend creating an ebook. Then giving it away for free with their email address. People will not just join a mailing list because you asked, they need incentive. Something like "Top 6 reason that..."

One of the easiest ways is to participate in forums in your niche and put the link to your site in your signature. Facebook is also a great way to advertise.
