What am I doing wrong? Asking girls out?

When I am asking a girl out via messaging I would say some like

Hey long time no talk how've ya been?

Or

Hey I thought you were really fun the other night would you like to go out sometime?

I don't know what I am doing wrong here. Hence these messages are going through either text, Facebook, or Twitter but I just can't seem to get a response. Maybe I'm not really warming the girl up. I tend to just jump into these questions just after the first one or two messages.

Any advice would help.

As a girl, I personally would not agree to go out with somebody that asks me via technology....I think that girls generally feel like they deserve somebody that would ask them out in person. When a guy asks them out in person, it tells them that "hey, maybe this guy's worth it. Maybe I'll give him a shot." Plus, when you ask in person, you are guaranteed to get an answer, whereas over messaging they could simply just exit out of your message and not respond. If you ask in person, they get the respect they deserve, and you get the respect you deserve
