What is DropBox? How does it work?

I plan on purchasing both an iPhone 4S (16GB) and an iPad 3G (32GB) this holiday season. My question is, since I already have an iPod classic (80GB), I won't be storing any music on my iPhone or my iPad... I have an external hard drive I use to store all my music...

I'll be using my iPhone for call, text, brief internet browsing, some applications, twitter, instagram, and checking emails throughout the day

I'll be using my iPad for watching movies, using applications, frequent internet browsing, Facebook, Skype, Facetime, reading online books and newspapers, casual application games etc.


My question is, some people have brought up the DropBox software to me several times and explained that it can save space on these respective devices for me.
