A hashtag is a way to describe a status,comment,picture or anything else on social media sites. If I were to post a picture of a cute puppy I could put #puppy #cute and essentially I describes my picture via hashtag. Most social media sites and apps will let you search by a defining hashtag. For instance if someone were to click the #puppy I posted, it would bring up all other pictures described with #puppy
