What is an effective method to promote your music?

Has anyone had any effective methods to promoting your music? The net is filled with sure fire ways to get your music out there but has anyone had any personal experiences that helped bring in fans?

Here is a list of things to make sure you are doing:
1. Set up a blog to keep your current fans updated and interested in what you are doing.
2. Promote yourself on social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook.
3. Start an email list to keep track of your fans and directly email them updates.
4. Create products and merch with your logo.
5. Webcasting.
6. Podcasting.
7. Market yourself on music forums.
8. Comment on other people's blogs relating to your genre of music.
9. Publish videos on youtube about yourself -- even if it is just a slideshow of pictures with your music in the background.
