How does skype and facebook makes their money ?

Their services to me are almost free like they are always free calls and more; how do they make their money ?

The ads on the side of the website. The companies pay the creator of the site to have them advertise for their company.

Facebook is notorious for tricking it's users into giving up information. They legally own all pictures and information you upload.

In the case of Skype, I would like to add that they make money because they charge for calls made to mobile numbers and landlines. The free calls are part of a marketing and technical strategy inherent to how Skype works.

Facebook makes money with advertising and perhaps merchandising some statistical information about the users. When it comes to what they share about information pertaining to each individual person, they are always changing their rules (terms of use) and "privacy settings". That said, let us also remember that some features are paid, such as when you want to make virtual gifts, etc, so that is a direct source of income for them.
