Do people really make money from YouTube?

Yes they do, a user can apply for partnership. Youtube will decide to pay you on similar things; number on people subscribed to you, if your unique, how often you make videos. etc

some people become famous because of youtube but they invest a lot of time into it but i'm not sure how much they would really make

The only way is to have lots of views in your videos also by
how many subbies you have!
Is it worth it Well In my opinion it is because you get extra cash
but i must warn you what you don't make much money unless you have
tons of subbies and views! but you get known as is really fun! Is like a
dew life I think is awesome. but if it isn't something
you like then why bother??
