Well, let's take a look at the features that make the Galaxy S such a great phone. The first feature is the huge 4 inch Super AMOLED screen. This is probably the best screen ever seen on a mobile. It may not be quite as large as the 4.3 inch screen on the HTC Desire HD, and with 480 x 800 pixels it doesn't have quite the resolution of the Retina display of the Apple iPhone 4, but when you pick up the phone and look at the screen, you can't fail to be blown away by its sharpness and brightness. That's because of the revolutionary Super AMOLED technology, in which the screen itself is touch sensitive, instead of the touch sensitive layer being placed on top.

The Galaxy S also comes with a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and a range of other features normally found on dedicated digital cameras. It has HD video recording too. There's one thing missing from the photography department though, and it's a flash.

Like all mobile phones these days, the Galaxy S has a fully featured digital media player, and it also comes with an FM radio with RDS. Usefully it has a 3.5mm audio jack so you can connect a set of headphones for the best audio quality. You can also pair the phone with a Bluetooth wireless stereo headset.

The next feature to note is assisted GPS. This will find your location and display it on Google Maps, so you'll never get lost in future. This feature is one of our favourites in fact, and it works surprisingly well, sometimes even picking up a satellite signal indoors!

No smartphone can be considered truly smart unless it can download apps, and with the Android Market you can download literally thousands of apps, many of them for free. Certain apps are pre-installed, such as Google Maps and the Layar Reality browser, an augmented reality app that overlays digital content about your surroundings as viewed through the phone's camera.

Naturally, browsing the web is a great experience on the Galaxy S. Android was built primarily for this purpose, and the large Super AMOLED display and the responsive touchscreen user interface make the perfect platform for the mobile web. Whether you're surfing web sites or keeping up with Facebook or Twitter, the Galaxy S does the job.

Finally, Samsung have equipped the phone with all the hardware grunt that a device of this calibre needs. The phone has a built-in memory of either 8GB or 16GB with the ability to expand this by up to 32GB with a microSD memory card. It has the fastest CPU currently available (1 GHz) and also the largest battery normally seen in a phone (1500 mAh).

All of this brings us back to the question: is the Samsung Galaxy S the best mobile of all time? It's tricky. We'd say that the Galaxy S matches or outperforms its rivals in every respect, bar one: the lack of a flash on the camera. What were Samsung thinking of? But if this isn't a problem for you, then we'd recommend the Galaxy S ahead of the HTC Desire, and it's even a match for the Apple iPhone 4.

You can get the Samsung Galaxy S free on contract for £25 per month, whereas the Desire is available for £20. To get an iPhone 4 without paying an upfront fee, you'll need to sign up to a £45 per month contract.
