I got my first depo provera shot and I'm not on my period will it work and how soon?

I read that you were supposed to get it within the first 5 days of your menstrual period. I got mine when I wasn't on my period, the nurse didn't mention that I had to be. I wasn't sure if the reason for getting the shot on your period was for pregnancy reasons. I'm not sexually active so I didn't know if it would matter. Thanks!
