Can someone please explain to me how twitter works?

Basically you just follow people or celebrities and post tweets similar to posting statuses on Facebook, and when you # anyone else that searches that # will see your tweet and can either retweet or reply to you, and the better your tweets are the more retweets you get and then you will get more followers.
