What would Facebook do to promote my start-up business?

A friend keeps after me to make a Facebook page? group? I don't know Facebook at all - for my new business saying it would get the word out - I just don't "get it" - I don't see how/why.

Can you guess - I don't do the social networking at all. Please advise.

When setting up a facebook page for your business you could use it as a local marketing avenue. After setting up your page and filling in your business profile you can start inviting people based on location to be your friend (you can put that you're a business in the area and you think they may be interested in your offerings). After this has been done you can post any business updates on your page, special events, or other pertinent information which reaches all of your friends.

Also when giving out business cards you can put your facebook profile link on there if you're not into proactively inviting people.
