Any Twitter fans know how to delete the @ mentions section?

I want to make my Twitter account as private as possible with out starting it again. I have changed my user name but when typing in my old name to google it still coes up with all the old @...... mentions. i just can't seem to be able to delete these off my account. also any way of not having followers see what i tweet... e.g if i tweet if its to someone rather than a general tweet. Thanks
