It's short for legitimate, which means that something is lawful (originally), or trustworthy (which is more the way we use it now).

as far as I know, legit means you are not engage in an illegal activity or just being legal or legitimate which is the long term for legit.. and yes, you are absolutely right!

some books usually say legit is the modern synonym for being cool. it is used to describe a noun that is of a particularly excellent quality.

Legit is a slang expression that basically means legal or legally correct. It can also mean whatever it is follows the rules of construction or behavior for its class of item.
Examples:
When John was released from prison, he went legit and got a real job working in a supermarket.
