Why do people put the #. Symbol then a word?

it called hashtagging, People use the hashtag symbol # before a relevant keyword or phrase (no spaces) in their post to categorize and to help them show more easily in a Search.

In twitter the hashtag (#) is used to create an internal link to all the other times someone has used that hashtagged word. It helps determine what topics are trending and connect people who are talking about the same thing.

It has pushed through to other social networking sites because of its popularity, however most other sites do not create that link (I'm pretty sure it's a copyrighted thing)

Its a hash tag. A hash tag is used on twitter and instagram to tag something. Like on instagram if you uploaded a pic of a dog you might tag these #dog #cute #puppy and if your tweeting something from some crazy party you might tag #yolo. (#yolo is a common hash tag) people tap one of those hashtagged words it takes them to a screen where it shows every picture with that same hashtag. You can also search for hashtags, like if you wanted to find a pic of a beach you would type in the search bar #beach. Then it would come up with every photo or tweet someone has tagged #beach in.
