Were looking into starting a deal/coupon website and have $3000 for advertising. What are some of your opinions on some of the places to advertise (facebook, etc). If you've had a good experience with some advertisers, please let me know!

Thanks!

First you might want to try not even spending that much money at all. Read the ADWORDS sybex book that you can probably pick up at any book store that details how to use google to advertise. There is also twitter and facebook, and the best way to bring fans that way is to give out free stuff! And your coupon place would be great. Try making the website too in the beginning and then market that through the variety of social networks.

And go ahead and give me a link of your coupon website once you start it up cause I would love to see some coupons.

I advise all my clients to advertise only using direct response advertising. This is advertising that is held accountable.

What I mean by this, is that you can measure the result of your advertising, I.e. your ROI or return on investment.

I know you're probably looking for specific places to advertise, but regardless of where you advertise, your advertisement must contain a benefit oriented headline, an offer, a call to action, and a deadline. Without these four ingredients in place, your advertisement will never reach its full potential.

As to where to advertise, I suggest you go where your prospects are. Who is looking for coupons? Who are looking for coupons that you have? Which of these people are online?

A mistake many people make is advertising in places where their prospect is not. A good advertisement in the wrong place will remain ineffective. Remember that marketing is the right message (offer) through the right media (radio, internet, print, tv, billboard, magazine, newspaper, etc) to the right market (think demographics...think who you current customers are...can you profile them).

A great advertising piece to the wrong market will be ineffective. For example, suppose you had an offer of five star restaurant quality steaks for $0.59 a pound and you advertised to vegetarians. How effective would that be?

That's an extreme example, but if you start to narrow your niche, little by little, you'll see giant gains in your response rate and ultimately your ROI or return on investment.

I know this answer probably isn't what you're looking for, but I hope it has got you thinking in the right direction to make some very smart decisions.

Another bit of advice is to not blow your whole advertising budget on one piece. Testing is the key here. Good luck with your venture.
