Why are my parents controlling?
I'm 16 and i find my parents are so controlling with most things. They won't let me have a boyfriend until i'm 18 and won't let me drink alcohol even just with a meal. They only allow me to watch certain films, they don't let me watch anything above a 12 rating. They don't let me sleep at friends houses unless they know the parents personally. They wouldn't let me have a mobile until i was 14 and they wouldn't let me have my ears pierced until i was 13. I'm not allowed twitter or facebook or anything like that. They ask me loads of questions about everything, like what i'm doing, what my friends are like, why i'm doing things and they are always telling me what to do. They are constantly on my back and i'm always cautious when i do things and i am always like would my parents be okay with this and it prevents me from doing anything. My friends get really annoyed cause i can't go to parties or sleep at their houses and go out with them. I find it hard to fit in an school and people don't understand why my parents are so strict and controlling so i feel looked down on by a lot of people. Why are they like this? I am the oldest of two kids and my sister is 14.

They mean well but parents screw up their kids lives more than anyone. My mom forces her ideas and dreams on me... I hate it! She thinks I'm a younger her and I hate having to constantly point out our differences!

You'll have your freedom soon! Just 2 years and you'll be legally be an adult and will be able to do whatever the hell you want!

Too bad. As long as you're a minor and you live at home you just have to take it. Actually you might even want to be on good terms with them if there's a chance of them giving you money for college.

Later, when they get old and you still feel the same way you can exact your revenge on them by putting them in an old people's home and never visit them.

I know exactly what you are talking about...and here is my best guess. They just wanna keep u safe and put u in the best position to succeed. They just wanna make sure that u work hard high school/college so that during the rest of ur life u can have fun. I know, trust me, it gets really annoying and frustrating but in two years, you'll be an adult and u can do whatever u want to. Just try and keep in mind that they are doing what they think is best...and in the long run, they are probably right. Hang in thereSmile

Honestly...that's not strict. Here's why.
-You shouldn't have a boyfriend before you're eighteen, because no relationship before that age even amounts to anything, or counts, for that matter. Statistics say it wouldn't last, anyway.
-You shouldn't have alcohol with a meal. That's underage drinking, and the only time you will experiance that in such a 'low key' manner will be in college.
-They don't want you watching films that include horrible violence, or porn. That's they only time it would include a higher rating, and honestly, you shouldn't have to watch porn in a movie to feel 'older'.
-I didn't have a mobile phone until I was fifteen, so unless you're paying for the phone and bill (As I am) you should be grateful you have a phone.
-They don't want you on Facebook and twitter, simply because parents are being told and shown all the 'cyber bulling'. They're trying to protect you from the danger of that.
-Your parents won't let you sleep at someones house they don't know. For all they know, the parents of that house will allow you to drink alcohol-they want to make sure there will be a responsible adult there.
Your parents are no more strict or controlling then the norm. They're being parents, and they're doing a pretty good job.
