i think it has done both. Even though new forms of social networking has led to a faster transfer of vital news and information (ex. middle east riots of early 2011); people have gradually become too dependent on them. nowadays everyone face is in a phone while in public and we've slowly been dehumanizing how we socialize with each other. In the past when people called each other on a phone, even though you can se who you are talking to, you can still gage that person's mood or word tense based on the sound of their voice. nowadays we just send shortened typed messages that can easily be taken out of context and usually are.

Most would probably argue that it has made their life better, and until i took sociology i would have said the same thing. Now i believe that all these tools we use in our daily lives, weather it be for our entertainment or work purposes, is slowly tearing us away from the company and communication with the people around us. Have you ever seen the movie Wall E? If so, remember how all the people on the ship became extremely over weight and never walked on their own feet or talked to a person face to face? That's probably where we will end up if we don't do something fast about the impact the media is having on the socialization of our culture.

Well i hoped this answered your question ok : ]
