It's a social networking website. And it's popular because many people use it.

Facebook is a social media network (website) that lets you share (your life) with friends, family, and helps keep you connected with long distance friends and family as well. Facebook will use cookies when you go to another site (right after you leave facebook), and if you didn't log out, the website that you visit may have a facebook widget that will display information about your friends who also like your interest on the particular page you just visited (check out disconect.me to rectify), and then when you go back on facebook, you will see adds taylored to your interest (based off of facebook cookies tracking you), so in the end, FB is a great tool to stay connected(best out there, and most popular), but be aware you are sacrificing some ( and more by the day) privacy.
