How do I give my computer priority wifi access over other devices?
My family's router is an n150 dir-601 d link router. When my brothers not using his laptop the internet works fine but he uses it almost every night for facebook, streaming movies, and youtube all at once. He really hogs up all the bandwidth on our wifi and I can't even do a few simple things like checking email without a horrible lag. Is there any way I can prioritize my computer over his so I can receive priority connection before him?

I know how to open up the d link interface by typing the url into the top box and putting in your password. On the configuration interface I'm really confused as to what to do next, it looks really technical. Please help!

thanks Smile

Look for QoS settings (often called WMM). Some QoS can control priority by IP or MAC address, other routers control by port only. Wireless is one port... So, depending on your router model/setup, you may or may not be able to control priority.... Check the manual...

What you are talking about is called QOS (quality of service). Some Netgear 150s do it but only based on content type...not source address. To do that you would need a higher priced router.

If you are real technical (sounds like not) it is possible to put a freeware software called DD-wrt on your router in place of the default operating system. It will do what you want.

You can do this by setting up QoS service on your router, you will configure your computers MAC address in the QoS settings. This will always give you more bandwidth, and throttle for everyone else. This is generally used for VoIP, but you can use it for workstations as well.
