How do you get your Twitter account verified?

I reached my Twitter following limit of 2000. I want to follow more people and I realized verifed accounts can go over that limit. What do I do to verify my account? If I have to pay, forget about it.
I thought getting into your email was saying you had a twitter and setting it up. Oh well.

Only Celebrities or people that are twitter "famous" get verified... it depends what type of verified you mean.

a) usually when you set up your twitter account you have verify your email address to start using twitter properly. If this is the case you will have a yellow bar at the top of your screen asking you to verify your email. If this bar isn't there check under 'settings', it will tell you if your email needs verifying or not.

b) the blue tick. This is the kind of verify only celebrities and people in the media are able to have. It is proof of true identity so that you know the celebrity account you are following is genuine.
