I've been seeing on tumblr and twitter people saying like we ship daryl or something like that using "ship" in other ways as well

did i miss something in the show or is it just something the fans came up with ?

No, "ship" wasn't made up because of the show..and it didn't come from the show.
"ship" is short for worship.
"ship" is used a lot in fanfiction. check out the fanfiction.net site.
It basically means they love Daryl alot.

If they are just saying "We ship Daryl" it means that they fancy Daryl Dixon and he's likely to be their favorite character. It's comparable to people just saying "Team Daryl" vs "Team Rick" or something. Then there are "shippings" where you ship characters together. For example, some people want Daryl and Carol to hook up so they "ship" them together. This ship comes with the shipping names "Caryl" or "Darol".
