Highly unlikely unless thay have been hacked. Most likely is that you are directed to a false Amazon or Ebay site - they will have viruses.

Yes, The thing you need to check is on the address on top. Make sure it show the page you are trying to log in for example (http://www.knokkeheist.be/sharebuilder/C...efault.htm and displaying yahoo has a page) that link is a FAKE SITE it's no longer working. Hope that helps you.

It's not unusual at all and has been going on for a few years now. Many of those sites allow users to post html code to their profiles including java script. Java script can be exceedingly dangerous as it easily flies under the radar of site operators' virus scans. Malware authors hijack legitimate accounts via phishing attacks or untrusted keylogger proxies and then plant code on the victims' pages to relay innocent users off-site in an attempt to either commit fraud or infect their machines.

Defense is fairly easy but not if you use IE. If you use Firefox with the NoScript add-in it's fairly easy to protect yourself from this type of attack. NoScript disables all client-side scripting by default and forces you to allow scripting on a site-by-site or even page-by-page basis. If you hit an ad on eBay that trips a scripting alert to an unknown site it's a pretty save bet that the ad page has been hijacked.

This is less of a problem on Amazon unless you are buying from a non-Amazon retailer but caution is still necessary. And on social networking sites such as MySpace or Facebook the problem is severe.

About the only sites that I use IE for now are Microsoft's site and the Outlook Web Access sites run by some of my customers. For any other site, it's Firefox or nothing.

Anti-virus software helps but is NOT a panacea. There are plenty of so-called "Zero Day" attacks that surface every day that will get past most anti-virus software for a day or more. By then your machine is part of a bot-net and it's too late.
