I wanna know if he got famous for being awesome or just ridiculous

He got famous for going on X Factor, but he didn't make it to bootcamp, and Gary Barlow tweeted him on Twitter and said he made a mistake rejecting him on X Factor. He then made his own video along with his one pound fish song, then he got recognized by Warner Music, and artists like Alesha Dixon and Timbaland have covered his song, so he is basically famous in his own right.
