How do online gaming companies make their money if all their games are free like Codemasters?

For those who know Codemasters, the company that made Archlord and Combat Arms, all the games they have to offer are free so how do they make their money? i know companies like blizzard make their players pay to play world of warcraft so its obvious where they get their money from, how does facebook make its money as well?

Ads. Or they're just free until they get a large enough amount of people hooked. It's common for Mmorgps to be free for some time and then switch to paid.

codemasters makes plenty of games. moreso for the handheld now.. but they still make pay games as well.


i'm guessing facebook uses ad revenue? i'm not sure as i don't get ads on my computer.. like i'm sure there is an ad to the right of this answer, but i can't see it.

1. Adviretisements are the most common way to earn money, for these companies. Games like CT Racer and others earn like this.

2. As they get famous, they start asking for money.
like A3 INDIA, they just allow leveling up upto level 30 and then you need to pay a monthly charge.

3. They launch EXPANSION packs of the games, hence the addicted players need to purchase them at high rates.

4. When the players are very happy with game, the developers reqest them for some donations, and in turn provide them with great things in game.

5. If their game becomes best game of the year, they win a huge amount of money.
