Grade 11 advanced english short story?

I have to write a short story for English class. It is supposed to be on how I see the world today; It was asked if have hope or despair and I have chosen despair. It could be on anything: Capitalism, social classes, media, etc. It could be symbolic or not. I need some ideas! I'm stumped. Please help??

maybe write a story about a family who were in some sort of natural disaster. you could go into your characters loosing family or maybe trying to save them and then blaming themselves in the story or something like that. it could be a teenager who is in a care home (because there family is dead or lost) reflect back on his past through dreams/ nightmares.

you could make that idea go almost anywhere...
