Twitter and its usage and importance?

I have been hearing about how social media, especially twitter, is the next generation when it comes to 2 way communication between business and consumers or other parties. I was wondering if anyone had good links for how to fully utilize and understand twitter (like the #word thing etc). Or is this all just a bunch of hype? Thanks

Unless you know like 100 people who will follow you then twitter is completely useless.

i signed up for a twitter account just to see what the hype was all about and i felt that it was stupid and pointless. just my opinion though.
