The Basis of Push Notifications

iPhone push notifications allow applications to keep you updated on activity that occurs within the applications, even when they aren't open on your iPhone. This service keeps you socially involved, even when you don't have the pertinent application open.
Popular Applications That Use Push Notifications

Several iPhone applications make use of push notifications. Perhaps the most popular one is Facebook, which sends push notifications for a number of activities, including when friends post messages to your Wall, comment on your photos and news feed posts and when someone sends you a direct or instant message. Other applications that use push notifications include Twitter, CNN, the social networking utility "FourSquare," Skype and WhatsApp," an application that facilitates free calling and instant messaging.

Problems with Push Notifications

Push notifications keep you connected to what's going on in your iPhone's mobile apps at all times, but that feeling of perpetual connectedness isn't always welcome. For example, if you comment on someone's Facebook status, the program sends you additional messages every time someone else comments, which can occur frequently. Additionally, you may confuse the sound and vibration that occur when you receive a new notification for a text or voice message.
Turning Push Notifications On and Off

If an application uses push notifications, they appear on your iPhone by default. Still, it's possible to turn the notifications off if you don't want to use them. Tap the iPhone's "Settings" button and then tap "Notifications." To turn off push notifications you receive from all applications on your iPhone, tap the blue "On" button to move it to "Off." Alternatively, tap the name of an application to adjust notification options individually.
