What does # mean on Facebook and Twitter?
What's the purpose of using the # symbol in these social networks? What does it mean?

as in...

#occupy
#first_world_problems
#cowboys
#ugh

They are hashtags. They are useless on Facebook so I don't see why people use them there, but oh well. For Twitter, it's supposed to be used to categorize tweets, I believe.
