It means your character is not being shown. For example, this appears every time I would use emoji symbols with my iPod touch. The desktop version of twitter would not .show them. It's just a default symbol used when things cannot be displayed. It really means nothing. It like when you click on a link and it takes you to a 404 page because the page doesn't exist.
