Is it illegal to not hire people with LinkedIN profiles?
As a boss, I am just about fed up with all the technological hullaballoo going on in the workplace these days! As the internet is not a regulated resource, is it permissible to discriminate against people who have LinkedIn profiles? I find that the kind of people who rely on social media tend to be bad for my business.

You can hire whomever you want. LinkedIN has *nothing* to do with one's qualifications. In fact, I would be dubious of someone who counts on an online profile to get them hired. Most are liars.

If you were really a boss, I'd think that you would know that it is in no way illegal to discriminate in this way.

In the u.s., there are statutes that prohibit making employment decisions based on race, gender, religion, national origin and in a few states, there are a few other categories. Alll other forms of decision making, no matter how stupid, are lawful.

LinkedIn is just a way of connecting with professionals. It is not necessary that people who have profiles on LinkedIn are bound to be good or poor in their work. It has got nothing to do with it.
The kind of work an individual does, totally depends on the individual's abilities and efforts he puts in. So why don't you interview people in detail before hiring them? The traditional way! |
