I saw and ad for customer service rep at a UPS store and they are asking for your social network link along with resume, why?

My only explanation may be that the company wants to get a better sense of who they are hiring. For example, if on your facebook you have pictures of you and your friends drinking and partying chances are you will not get hired to be a teacher.

Obviously because they want to do their own version of a background check on you. It's entirely up to you whether you want to share this information with them. I certainly wouldn't.

(Are you sure this was a legitimate offer from the UPS Store itself? It wasn't some kind of Craigslist scam or anything?)

A lot of jobs do that now, because they use it as part of their interview process. They like to see what you post to the public, because chances are it reflects on you're personality and ethics.

Some people believe that they shouldn't ask for that information, because it violates a persons privacy, but unless you friend them on most of the networks, then they can't see any of the information you don't want them to see.

They are using it to see what kind of person you are by reading your post and your friends posts. They believe that will determine/predict what type of employee you'll be. I don't know you but if I were in the job market I would delete all social networking accounts before applying anywhere. The slightest thing they'll use against you. I think its rediculous that employers do this, what your private life is really isn't their concern. Goog luck..
