Macbook screen goes dark? (10 points)?

I have a Macbook A1181 Core 2 Duo. After about a few minutes of leaving it on, the screen dims out making it very hard to see the desktop, but I can just about make it out. If I use the brightness buttons on the keyboard it will come back on. I've tried replacing the inverter with a brand new one but it still dimms out. And its not the power settings because I made it so the screen doesn't turn off. Is it a weird setting on the Macbook or is it a completely different fault? Can anyone help please?
