Where can I change settings on face book to receive important mail only from specific individual?

getting inundated my dozens of irrelevant posts every day, but don't want to block the person.

You can change what notifications you receive. I believe you cannot choose a specific person though.
Click on the top right of page & select Account Settings then Notifications on left side.
Select or unselect what you want notifications for. That will reduce the inundation.
