Why are some people SO socially awkward?

Im in college and aroud my dorm, some poeple are friendly but some are just jack weirdos. Like not saying hi, avoiding eye contact. Has social media destroyed us all? For example I went to make tea in the dorm kitchen and three girls were making cookies, I said "smells delicious" and they didn't respond so I left saying in my head "F*CK you idiots.

I know what you mean. I'd say there are several things that contribute to this variation in how people interact. One factor involves aptitude. Some of us are simply better at the kinds of fairly subtle social cues and behaviors required to achieve a smooth and comfortable interaction. Just like athletic ability or intellectual capacity, social aptitude isn't evenly distributed across the population. Another factor involves cultural and sub-cultural variability. Where you were raised can make a huge difference in how you interact with others. While making and maintaining eye contact may seem like a sign of friendliness in some cultures, it is viewed as rude or aggressive in others. Beyond that, some of us are shy and have a hard time engaging in social interactions that the rest of us view as routine. There's research suggesting that there may be a shy gene that predisposes some people to withdrawn behaviors. Finally, consider that social stratification plays a role in our social behaviors. The girls you encountered may have felt that you were either above or below them in social status. The fact that you're male might have influenced them to ignore you in that context. Probably the best bet is to just cut people plenty of slack when it comes to the different levels of social awkwardness. Mostly we're all doing the best we can. Regards.
