Is it rude to facebook someone instead of calling them?

A guy I went on a few dates with is ignoring me because I facebooked him instead of calling him back. He called saturday but I was unable to take the call. I sent him a quick facebook message. I have done this before and he did not care, but now he is mad.
Should I call him or wait for him to call? Also should I apologise?

The main reason i have not called him is that he is such a chatter box that our conversation would be an hour or so and I did not have time for that this weekend.

So you had time to go out on dates with him, but you don't have time to talk to him on the phone? Of course he would be mad.

I would be disappointed too.
