How do people make money with websites like friendster?

To sign up for friendster is free, so how does the owner of the website make money and able to maintain the site? Am sure there are many more sites like that eg: facebook and so on. Tnks.

Not sure what friendster is but things like facebook get there money from donations, and sometimes fund raisers. Most big name companies like facebook, google, and youtube make a lot of money from advertising. For instance some adverters pay thousands of dollars to "buy" ad space on youtube.

pretty much the same way TV stations make money with commercials.
