Facebook chat on ipad?

Is it me who is blind? I can't see the chat on the standard facebook application. Shouldn't it be on the right side of my screen?

I've heard something about using an app called 'Facebook messenger' specifically designed for chatting, but i just want the chat to be in one place. In the facebook app.

I only see 'Status,' 'Pictures' and 'Check In'

Did you try opening your application in horizontal position where a list of your friends appears on the side of the screen. Tap the gear-wheel icon next to the list and then tap "Go Online." If problem still exists then provide some additional details.
