I have a questions about the new twitter layout?

So basically I have been seeing many people on twitter have their full picture as their avatar/icon and I was wondering how they do it? I have tried so many different things, but twitter always makes me crop half my picture off. My picture ends up looking like a tiny box while others have huge images that are obviously the full picture. Is it because of the shape of the picture? Is it because of where I'm uploading it from? I might go insane if someone doesn't explain this to me.
