Question with reference to printing color photos with Dell 924 Photo Printer?

Just bought this printer and question my understanding of the manual regarding printing photos.
Can I print plain color pictures with a regular black and color cartridge inserted or do I have to, as
I understand the manual, have a color and photo cartridge (black removed) inserted to print color pictures?

You can print pictures using the regular cartridges but for a better quality they recommend you use a higher quality ink cartridge for better pictures.
