How to talk to my crush on Facebook?

So, there's this boy in my class. I've known him since primary and we're 14 now. We used to sort of be friends when we were about 12 and I'd sometimes talk to him. But now I don't talk to him at all and the thing is, he's popular in school and I am not. I'm friends with him on facebook, but I can't pop up and say 'hi' because I haven't talked to him properly for ages and he'll wonder why I'm doing it, so please don't tell me to do that. I just want ways to get him to notice me on facebook, anything, without directly popping up. I just like him so much, and because we used to be friends I've liked him more over the years. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance :-))
