What is the us sons of the american revolution?
My 4th grandfather, Ezra Mitchell Saylers(1812-1909) was a member. What is it and what does it mean?

They are the male descendants of soldiers who served in the colonial army during the Revolutionary War. The DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) are the female descendants of those soldiers.

The Sons of the American Revolution, was fraternal organization. You had to show proof than your ancestor fought or contributed in the Revolution.
Your grandfather probably belonged to that, and several other fraternal clubs and organizations such as the Freemasons, Elks, Odd Fellows, and so on. It was kind of like the "social media" of the day. A way to network with other people in the community. The Sons (and Daughters) are still around, and have some genealogy resources available, If you want to trace your ancestor further. Links to the Sons, and the Daughters of the AR below. |
