What does the # mean? I think I sort of know. I'm not all with it in technology these days.

Its a hashtag. Hashtags are the hash symbol # followed by a keyword a tag

Hashtags are a great way to search and tag things in twitter. for example

How do you download this for free? #help

The person tagged that tweet with help. So anybody searching for the hashtag #help it will come up. People also hashtag events like #GC2010 for an event that happened 2010. or #GC2011

kind of get it? Its a tagging technique
