Computer taken on allegation of harrasment?
My computer has been taken by the police on allegation of harrasment by social media. Apparently, this occurred 3-4 months ago. I remember the messages, but they were innocent, but apparently the person still complained. The messages were deleted around 2 months ago when I changed over account and I've used the computer a lot since. What is going to happen and when will I get my computer back? Will they still find the messages even if they have been overwritten and why can't they just give me a warning? Thanks

It depends on what charges the person you harassed filed with the police. And yes, they can most likely find the messages still on your computer.

Obviously the person you messaged filed a formal criminal complaint to the police of harassment. They seized your computer via a warrant. They will take it to their IT lab and have an expert retrieve all communications you had with this person and all of your web history going back to the day you started using the computer. Deleting the history does not delete the files. All files stay on your computer. They most likely traced the messages back to your computer via the IP address which is on every electronic communication.
Depending on what you put on a web site or said via the social web site it may be deemed harassment which in most states is a criminal misdemeanor or it could be considered a class 4 felony if it is deemed as "Cyber-stalking". My suggestion is that you contact a criminal defense attorney now before charges are filed in the State Attorneys office. Have your attorney stay in touch with the police dept. and the SA office so if and when charges are filed you may volunteer cooperation throughout. It truly will go much easier for you if you show remorse and intent to cooperate. With no prior criminal history you will likely get off with a fine and light probation if you cooperate.
