The best way to get followers on Twitter is to "be interesting enough to 'be followed.'"

You also have to do any combination (if not all) of the following:

1) Word of mouth: contact your real world friends personally to follow you on Twitter
2) E-mail: message your real world friends your Twitter information
3) Post your Twitter info using any other social networking tools, like Facebook or Myspace

Just like a blog--if you send out interesting Tweets people want to hear, you'll eventually gain more followers (through word of mouth).
