You're not going to be arrested or charged.

I do 100x way worse things than you do, and the only thing I've gotten was a warning from my ISP, which I ignore.

FBI is too busy trying to catch carders or people with big botnets.

Download managers aren't illegal, it's the type of files that you choose that can be illegal. If you are sourcing content that is being given away for free by the people who created it, then you should be ok. But if you are downloading anything that isn't for free sharing, then copyright infringement comes into play, and that is illegal in most countries.

The legalities to download a copy of a file depends on "licensing". If it is not offered free by public notice saying it is, then it is not legal.

"How" you download it does not matter. IT is simply by downloading in which you are making a copy that is not legal. So it is the act of copying from the server to your computer that you are breaking the law.

Remember, when you buy software you are not. You are actually purchasing "the right" to use a copy as outlined in the user agreement. I know, no one reads those, but we all sorta know in the back of our minds it is wrong.

The issue is not if you will get caught but when will you get caught. So please reconsider before downloading anything in this nature. Your download manager is just fine and makes downloads more convenient but keep your focus on 'what' you are downloading. Is it legal or now, is it a virus or not, etc.

That depends entirely on what YOU are downloading. The program isn't breaking any laws. If you are downloading copyrighted material without consent, YOU are breaking the law and the law will come after YOU. Owning a gun isn't against the law. Using it to rob or kill someone is. Use a tad bit of common sense.

IDM itself is perfectly legal, however downloading pirated material with it is not.

So what are your chances of being caught? It depends. Here's a few scenarios.

- If you download a few pirated movies/programs/games/whatever per month: Slim, you're small time and it's generally not worth it for anyone to pursue legal action against you (the days of the RMAA attacking people for downloading a few songs are over).
- If you download a LOT of pirated material per month: Moderate, depending on your ISP. Though you'll generally get a warning letter before any legal action is taken. The chance is also higher if you congest the network with all your downloading, or continue downloading after getting a warning (wait about 6 months).
- If you redistribute your pirated material: High, as these are the people they really want to nab.
- If you brag about having pirated material in social media (or anywhere where your real name is attached to the post): High, as you just provided proof that you pirate. You'll also be banned.
- If you brag about it anonymously: None, though the site you post on might ban you.
