How do you see @replies on twitter?

If someone isn't following you but you send them an @reply can they see it? How do they see it? Does it come as a direct message?

it will notify them by email if that notification is turned on. If not they can check it through the right hand module under 'direct messages' or '@(usernamehere)'

They see it even if they are not a follower of you. It's because the message is directed at them. It will be in their timeline.
