Social networking as a whole has gained considerable popularity over the last three to five years. I remember the day when MySpace was all there really was! I can honestly say, without shame, that I NEVER had a MySpace site, and for that I'm truly grateful. But I just wanted to do somewhat of a comparison of what seems to be the two heavy-hitters in the social media world - Facebook and Twitter. As you can tell by the title, my favorite or the two is Facebook.
Purpose of Use
I actually understand Facebook. I understand what it's intended to do and what its general purpose is - to bring people together. I've found more people on Facebook that I've known in the last twenty years than I ever have through any other medium. Twitter, I just don't understand what it does. It seems like glorified text messaging to me. And maybe that's all it's supposed to be. Maybe it's for those to text if your cell phone has a per-text cost incoming or outgoing. Perhaps that's it! (I really just thought of that as I was typing this article). Other than that I don't see much purpose for Twitter. I'm currently using it as a way to market my articles that I'm writing through Associated Content, so we'll see how that goes. Other than that, Facebook is the one I understand, therefore, it's the one I use more.

Application Development
Facebook gives developers the option of actually enhancing the product through developing applications specifically for it. For the hard-core developers this is probably a dream world and a way to put their stamp on this reign of social media mega-applications. I don't see much happening as far as Twitter with application development. It seems to just be a way to communicate quick messages to a person or group of people. There are ways to tie-in your twitter updates to your Facebook account though; another plus for Facebook and perhaps an honorable mention for Twitter.

Accessibility to You
I find that I get random "followers" from Twitter, which is okay I suppose but I'd like to know who in the world you are! With Facebook at least I can approve or not approve if you become my "friend." Most of the time the people that want to connect with me on Facebook are people I already know. Sure, I have some stragglers in my network, who doesn't? But I'm okay with that; it hasn't proven costly... yet. Facebook also has ways of monitoring who can access your content. With Twitter perhaps this isn't needed as it's just text messages.

Games, Causes, Fan Pages, Quizzes, Blogs, oh my!
This is one of the cool features of Facebook. It's like it is social networking PLUS personal satisfaction during those down-time moments. I've seen more games, and causes, and fan pages and quizzes and pictures and everything in the last year or two that I've really used Facebook than I ever have through almost any other website. It can almost be overwhelming, especially if you have hundreds of "friends." I have friends who do video blogs through Facebook. I have friends who are a part of certain cause groups through Facebook. Facebook is a good way to be connected not only to other people, but other causes, other companies, other ideas, other innovations as well.

Ability to share multiple media formats with friends
Have a video you want to share? You can do it on Facebook. Saw something on YouTube that caught your attention. You can share it on Facebook. Have a link to a recent news article that was interesting? You can share it on Facebook. Twitter you can just send a link for everyone to see. It is what it is. With Facebook you have more outlets for media presentation. Probably the most common that I see though is people sharing YouTube videos, or creating their own videos and uploading them.

Overall, I like Facebook a lot better than Twitter. Now to be fair, I think they were intended to reach different audiences, or at least have different purposes, even though they both fall under the umbrella of social media outlets. Facebook is broader in its approach whereas Twitter is narrower in its approach. If there are any Twitter fans out there who want to defend Twitter, do it here! Leave me a comment about what you think. I'm open to reason, but until I find reason to give Twitter more of a chance, I'm Facebook all the way!
