How would I get a brokers license?
Hey I'm 18 and looking to get a brokers license. I decided to not go to college after having success in tech in high school and choosing to live the manhattan life. I've been involved in deals for the sale of sports teams, getting financing for fracking and oil well projects, the sale of pre-IPO twitter shares and other deals. I just want to get a license as a broker to look a little better on my resume. I'm also looking to form my own firm that'd focus purely on managing deals in sports, tech and energy. So how would I get it?
Yes I know what series 7 is. I just want to know if there's anything else I'll need.

You will need to pass the FINRA Series 7 Exam.

First, you posted in insurance. What do you actually want to do???

"I've been involved in deals for the sale of sports teams, getting financing for fracking and oil well projects, the sale of pre-IPO twitter shares and other deals."

If you've really been involved of these different things, you should be able to tell us more specifically what you need.

You need no license to do anything on your list, other than sell shares of stock. Listing all of that other stuff you claim to have been involved in (did your father's company handle these types of deals?) is a waste of time.

You cannot even sit for the series 7 exam without having a FINRA sponsor.

If you don't even know what types of licenses you might need, you will not be able to start a successful business. You need to do your own homework.

Honestly, I have no idea what you want to do; you are far too vague and/or unclear. What do you mean by "handle deals?" What kinds of deals? What will you actually do; look for buyers/sellers, write up contracts, negotiate pricing/terms, etc?

In NY, you'll need a sponsoring company before you can even get that license. It's not the sort of thing to "spice up your resume" with - unless you're looking for a straight sales job.

And . . .sorry to bring you down to earth - but an 18 year old from New York who claims to have gotten financing for fracking and oil well projects, just isn't going to be taken seriously, unless that means you sat in on meetings where a parent was actually doing the work - and if THAT was the case, you're going to have to prove your work ethic first. Focusing on an extremely niche market, is a great way to shoot yourself in the foot - but lumping sports and energy together, is scattered enough to make it seem like you're just a kid fantasizing about what you want to be when you grow up.

Go get a job. ANY job. Flip burgers. PROVE YOUR WORK ETHIC, as you build your skills in your off time.
